It’s easy to get caught up in the common myths that circulate in society about sex. As taboo as the topic is, it seems people love gossiping about the ‘rights and wrongs’ and the ins and outs (pardon the pun) of sex and relationships. Today, I’m here to debunk my top 3 myths and clear up the little lies that we seem to tell ourselves about what should be a normal, natural and healthy part of life.
Myth #1 - Most women can reach orgasm through vaginal penetration alone
This couldn’t be farther from the truth: approximately 70% of women need direct clitoral stimulation to reach orgasm. You heard right ladies and gents; whilst being vaginally penetrated it’s important that you simultaneously stimulate the clitoris (this can be done manually with your hand or vibrator or by finding a sex position that allows the clitoris to be indirectly stimulated).
It’s important to know that no two women share the same experience of desire or orgasmic pattern and misperceptions about the ‘right’ way to have sex leave many women feeling inadequate. Get acquainted with what feels pleasurable for you and let go of orgasm expectations.
Myth #2 - Women don’t enjoy masturbating as much as men do
This is a load of sh*t. Many women love taking time out to enjoy masturbation, we just don’t talk about it as much as men! Self-pleasure is a normal, natural and healthy part of life and if it’s something you enjoy, then I recommend making time for it. Yes, many men love masturbating and it seems it’s kind of ‘trendy’ throughout the teenage years for young men to admit they’re doing it all the time. But ladies, it’s time for us to talk about it more and admit that we enjoy masturbation! In doing so we will normalise it and encourage other women to do that same!
Myth #3 - Women who want and enjoy lots of sex are ‘slutty’
Let’s get this straight: women who want and enjoy lots of sex know what’s good for them and are enjoying life! Enjoying sex is healthy and wanting lots of it is perfectly ok! If you are enjoying lots of sex (as long as it’s healthy and consensual) then I say go for it! Own your sexuality and your zest for a lively sex life; you are a beautiful and amazing woman and by owning that part of yourself you will inspire others to do the same.
