Podcast Episode 208: How We Reconnect in Relationship When Things Get Hard
I’ll be honest with you: I’ve had a stressful month with some personal things going on behind the scenes. Instagram doesn’t show the tough times, and I’m a human being having a human experience, just like you. So I’m doing my best to rest, stay grounded, and be gentle with myself.
So in this episode, I wanted to talk about relationship because from the outside you see the cute Insta pics, but Nick and I have been together nine years, and we’ve traversed a lot. What I’ve been reflecting on is how we find our way back to each other when things get hard. The first is our core values - when we start bickering or lacking vitality, we get honest, sit down, and look at where we’re out of alignment and how to come back.
Then there’s couples therapy. We do the work, and I swear, without it we wouldn’t be together today. We also give each other more solitude to fill our own cups, we prioritise our health (health is wealth - it affects everything, including desire), and we lean on friends and mentors rather than expecting one person to be everything, because that’s too much pressure on a relationship.
And the last one, we make time for just the two of us. This is always a work in progress... we homeschool, so we’re with our kids 24/7, but our kids are asleep by 7pm, so we get our evenings. It doesn’t have to be sexy or romantic. These are the consistent things we always come back to, the go-tos that carry us through the hard times.
